As a new business owner, you will quickly find out that a logo is a necessity. You need it for your business cards, website, Google My Business profile, flyers, social media profiles, and more. So, inevitably, you start searching for a solution and instantly find hundreds of websites offering logos for free! What a relief! Maybe building a business won’t be so expensive after all? Before you get too excited, let’s talk about the pros and cons of those free logo makers.
Free logo makers are wonderful because they are free. You can use these tools to begin experimenting with fonts, colors, and icons to get an idea of what you want your logo to look like.
Affordable high-resolution, finished logos are usually an option.
Most free logo makers allow you to pay anywhere from $50 to $100 to download your finished logo in multiple sizes. This is a wonderful deal considering that you could easily end up paying a professional logo designer $300 to $500 or more.
Very few of us are naturally good graphic designers.
If you don’t have a background in graphic design it can be difficult to choose colors, fonts, and icons that work well together. Using a free logo maker somtimes ends up costing you more time than it is worth.
An attractive design should not be your only consideration.
After working with logos from a variety of organizations over the years, I have discovered that there is A LOT you should keep in mind before choosing a logo. Here are a few of my findings.
How does it look in black and white?
Logos need to look great in black in white as well as color. It costs extra to print in color and sometimes it won’t be worth the expense depending on the project. Whatever logo you choose needs to look equally awesome in black and white as it does in color.
Does it offer horizontal and vertical options?
Most logo generators only allow you to create one version of your logo. However, it is best if you have a horizontal and a square or vertical version.
Logos used on social media profiles are much easier to see (and read) if the logo is square or vertically oriented. However, on letterhead and mobile websites, logos that are horizontally oriented work best.
If you choose to sponsor a conference or local event in the future, the event organizer will usually provide you with height or width restrictions for your logo. If you have a vertical logo and the space reserved for the logo is horizontal, you may not be able to see or read your logo at all. It is always best to have a horizontal and vertical version of your logo.
Simple fonts are best.
While you may never plan to purchase a billboard, sponsor a little league team, or have a website, circumstances could change. If you choose a logo with an ornate or script font, it’s likely your logo will be difficult to read when its size is decreased or if someone attempts to view your logo from a distance. Simple logos are best for readability.
Note what colors and fonts are used before you buy.
Logo generators are wonderful about providing the file types they promise, but they don’t usually record what fonts were used on your logo or the hex color codes used.
If you want to match the font of your logo to the heading of a flyer in the future or use the same color blue on your business cards that you used in your logo, write the hex code down before you purchase your logo from the generator.
All file types are not created equal.
This is the most important consideration of all. If you choose to move forward with a free logo generator, make sure it provides you with an SVG or Scalable Vector Graphics file. Wix’s logo maker allows you to download this file type. An SVG file can be scaled to very small and very large sizes without losing quality.
Most printing companies will ask for an SVG or AI file. If you don’t have the original SVG file it could end up costing you a lot more money up the road. At this point, the only way to create an SVG file from other file types is by tracing the logo which is very time-consuming and costly.
I hope this article helped shed some light on the pros and cons of using logo makers! While it is not impossible to create a great logo yourself, it is best to keep these few basic considerations in mind.
Choose a logo that looks great in black and white and that can be arranged in horizontal and vertical versions. Use a simple font, note what fonts and colors you use, and make sure you get the SVG or AI file and keep the original file somewhere that you won’t lose it. You can do it!
